Doug serves as general counsel and partner at CM Wealth. He joined CM Wealth in 2019 and was elected to his position in 2021. Doug formerly chaired CM Wealth’s managing board and is a member of its investment and private equity committees.
Doug’s combined business and legal career spans some 40 years in Northeast Ohio. A Cleveland-area native with ancestral roots in the community, Doug earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting, MBA and law degree from Case Western Reserve University.
Before obtaining his law degree, Doug had a manufacturing background and worked full time through law school. He joined Squire, Sanders and Dempsey and later was a partner at Spieth, Bell, McCurdy and Newell. In his legal practice, he specialized in areas of estate planning and general business law, focusing on matters pertaining to privately-held businesses and related family wealth management and planning issues.
He combines his legal background with real-world business experience gained by serving on boards of many privately-owned companies, both large and small, and as an investor in several industrial companies. He has effectively served complex families through advisory relationships that run the gamut from estate and gift planning, generation-skipping wealth transfer planning, the formation of appropriate legal entities to implement these strategies, and appropriate governance mechanisms to sustain them.
Doug is also a trustee of the Natural History Museum, currently serving on the governing executive committee and is chair of the finance committee and co-chair of the governance committee. He enjoys fishing, engagement with nature, and woodworking. His wife, Laurie, is a retired M.D., PhD who specialized in internal medicine. They have three adult sons and two grandchildren.
